BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test)

BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test) is an online computer-based entrance exam conducted by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) for admission to its undergraduate engineering, pharmacy, and science programs at its campuses in Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad.

BITSAT is considered one of the most competitive entrance exams in India, and it evaluates a student’s proficiency in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (or Biology for Pharmacy), English Proficiency, and Logical Reasoning.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the BITSAT exam:

1. Eligibility Criteria:

To appear for BITSAT, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:

a. Educational Qualification:

  • For B.E. and B.Pharm. Programs:

    • B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering): Candidates must have passed their Class 12th (10+2) or equivalent examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).
    • B.Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy): Candidates must have passed their Class 12th or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB). However, students with PCM are also eligible.

  • Minimum Marks Requirement:

    • Candidates must secure at least 75% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (or Biology for B.Pharm.) in their 12th board exams.
    • Additionally, they must have at least 60% marks in each subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology).

  • English Proficiency: Candidates must have proficiency in English.

b. Age Limit:

  • There is no specific age limit, but candidates should have passed their Class 12th in the previous year or the current year of the BITSAT exam.

c. Number of Attempts:

  • A candidate can attempt BITSAT only twice in two consecutive years.

2. Course Programs:

BITSAT is the entrance exam for various undergraduate programs offered at the three campuses of BITS (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad). These include:

  • B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) in:

    • Computer Science Engineering (CSE)
    • Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)
    • Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Instrumentation Engineering

  • B.Pharm. (Bachelor of Pharmacy)
  • M.Sc. Programs (Integrated Master’s Program):

    • M.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biological Sciences
    • M.Sc. (Tech.) in Information Systems, General Studies, and more.

3. Exam Pattern:

BITSAT is a 3-hour long online exam that assesses candidates on a wide range of subjects. The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) distributed among four sections.

Section Subject No. of Questions
Part I Physics 30
Part II Chemistry 30
Part III (a) English Proficiency 10
Part III (b) Logical Reasoning 20
Part IV Mathematics/Biology 40
Total 150 Questions

a. Marking Scheme:

  • Each correct answer is awarded 3 marks.
  • 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer (negative marking).
  • No marks are awarded or deducted for unattempted questions.

b. Extra Questions:

  • If a candidate completes all 150 questions before the time limit, they have the option to attempt an additional set of 12 questions (4 each from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology).
  • These extra questions allow candidates to score higher and potentially rank better.

4. Syllabus:

The BITSAT syllabus is primarily based on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology. Here’s a subject-wise breakdown:
